The Burn Podcast by Ben Newman

Identifying the Standard in YOUR life

Ben Newman Season 5 Episode 30

This week's episode of the show is SPECIAL. We're digging into the topic behind my brand new book, The Standard, which releases August 1st, 2023.

Over the last 18+ years of coaching some of the highest performers in the world in sports and business, I'd like to think I know a thing or two about what a high Standard looks like. After taking a walk with my mentor Jon Gordon last year, it hit me... I had to write this book and identify what it looks like for someone to live to Standard in THEIR life. In this episode I cover some very important topics that made it into the book, but also shamelessly telling YOU that it is one you don't want to overlook.

Full episode live on on podcast platforms and Youtube.

Speaker 1:

But standard over feelings and that type of a life-setting mentality is not for everybody. You have to show up when you don't feel like it and you have to show up after you win, and that makes the difference and that is the standard, and that is why I wrote the book. This week's episode of the Burn. I am Ben Newman and you know how we do this. Every single week I'm going to bring in you a story of an athlete, an entertainer, a celebrity, an entrepreneur, somebody performing at their highest possible level, who is recognized. That why and purpose is not enough. It's that underlying burn that ignites your why and purpose, that causes you to be disciplined in your daily action, on the days that you don't want to do it, and especially after you win. But then you've also become accustomed to occasionally we do episodes where it's one on one, just you and I together, and today I am fired up for this very special burn episode. Now I do have to drop a major shout out, so that shout out goes to my beautiful bride, amy. Today is her birthday when we drop this episode, so happy birthday, amy. I will tell you here is something that is absolutely amazing. 18 plus years working with the highest performers in the world in sports and in business. All the travel, all the time away, all the sidelines. Amy has never said no, not a single time, to a trip, to a commitment, to an opportunity for me to lean in, to what it takes to attack, and I can just never thank her enough for everything that she has done to really be an example, the real example in our family, of what the standard is, what it means to lean in, what it means to connect to that burn and what it means to be a team. So, baby, I love you and happy birthday For each and every single one of you. Let's attack this special burn episode together. I wanted to talk about a couple of exciting things that are going to happen this week, things that without you they wouldn't be happening. And when I say without you, it's the individuals who support us, part of our team, part of the journey. We're all in this fight together the listeners of the burn, the people who we have the opportunity to work with in sports and in business, the people who bring us in for keynotes, the people who utilize legacy media, the people who utilize all of the services that we provide to fight with you to drive continual peak performance in your life and that's why we keep bringing these episodes of the burn every single week, because it's that never finished, own it mentality which drives everything, which is why I decided to write the book the Standard. So on August First, the book officially drops. Now I gotta tell you this is one of those books that I have been waiting to write and finally I decided to stop waiting.

Speaker 1:

You know, it was one of those impactful walks that I had with John Gordon, my mentor, last year when I was with the family in Laguna Beach where I'm back this year. We take off the month of July from travel to just be together as a family, to lock in before I'm on a sideline every Saturday and every Sunday the rest of the year, and so I'm walking with John Gordon, I go to see him in Santa Monica where he has a place, and we're just talking about life and we're talking about books and we're talking about writing and we're talking about impact and that day he really planted is. He's done so many times for me on my journey and I am so thankful to John. You know we've done a couple of burn episodes with him. His brand new book, the One Truth is absolutely unbelievable. If you didn't listen to our recent burn episode about the One Truth, make sure you listen to that episode. It is lights out and you better pick up a copy.

Speaker 1:

But John and I are talking and it was conversations about coaching and the standard and impact and not doing things like everybody else leaning in and really being your best and attacking. You know the world that we live in today. There's so much chaos and there's so much uncertainty and there's so much hyperbole and all the shit that we hear and sometimes we don't even know what to believe anymore. It's why you have to surround yourself with people that love you and care about you. It's why I still have two coaches reading books every single day, having mentors like John Gordon in my life, who led me to Christ in 2008, and is still a mentor to me to this day, encouraging me with this book idea a year ago on a walk down Santa Monica Beach, and so we talked about the standard, and at that time, on that same walk, he talked about high state of mind, low state of mind. So you following the drift here. So he's talking about high state of mind, low state of mind. That's in the book the One Truth. He published it. He and I are talking about the creation of this book, the Standard, and now it drops tomorrow.

Speaker 1:

For those of you that are part of the launch team. Thank you For those of you that have already pre-ordered copies. Thank you For those of you this week that are gonna grab copies. Thank you For those of you that might be in New York City. Special announcement drop here August 23rd. The book will be featured in Times Square in New York City. Make sure to send me a DM at continued fight and we can link up in order to meet in Times Square for maybe a great picture opportunity, opportunity to shake hands, opportunity for a hug you guys know I'm a hugger in order to see each other and for me to say thank you with deep appreciation and gratitude for the support of the book.

Speaker 1:

So I wanted to share a little bit about the book today on the podcast to really help you dive into how this book and today's podcast can help you attack the finish to your year, attack the next level of continual peak performance on your journey in your life, because there are no do-overs in life and that's why we have to have that never finished. Own it mentality in everything that we do. It's Rye wrote the book the Standard Because you turn on the TV you'd read an article in Forbes and there's a business leader and she's talking about the standard of her organization and why they have so much growth. Or you turn on the TV and you hear a sports team win a world championship and you hear a coach reference the Standard. But nobody had yet to write the book on what the Standard actually means. What is the Standard? So I decided, after doing this work for 18 years as I mentioned earlier, 18 years was some of the highest performers to ever walk the face of the earth in sports and in business to write the book the Standard To help it be clearly written and stated what the Standard is and what the Standard isn't. There are 24 things that make up the Standard and there's other things but ways that highlight and embody the Standard that are at the beginning of the book and I dive into them, but I just wanna share these 24 with you as we're on this journey of this burn podcast together today. So, before applying the Standard in your life, you must understand precisely what it is. From there, you can start to implement and master the principles of the Standard as an overarching philosophy. So here are the 24.

Speaker 1:

Aspects of what the standard is. The standard is meaningful. The standard is detailed. The standard requires making the right choices. The standard requires honesty and incitfulness. Now keep in mind, we dive into each of these. These are just the headers.

Speaker 1:

The standard requires discipline. The standard eliminates motivation. The standard answers the why and that burn. The standard challenges you to advance your life. The standard deletes negatives from your life. The standard forces you to reflect on your core values. The standard promotes ethical values. The standard fulfills emotional need without being emotional itself. The standard is your habits. Taken to the next level, the standard creates unreasonable and uncomfortable scenarios. The standard involves elements of risk. The standard breeds confidence. The standard grows self-esteem. The standard moves you closer to who you want to be. The standard is a public declaration. The standard is unique to you, but also sets an example for others. The standard is not about being perfect. The standard is not negotiable. The standard is all about consistency. The standard is not about goals. If you want to know how important the standard is, reflect back on the times in your life when you've been most successful and break down. Why were you driving that success. I bet 24 of those elements showed up consistently in your answer.

Speaker 1:

Yet because of our emotion and our feelings you hear me talk about standard over feelings all the time we move away from what the standard is in our lives because you had success. The most successful people continue to drive success after they win. That's the difference. They understand that unrequired mentality that we talk about. They know that the opposite of the standard is unacceptable. That behavior is unacceptable. If I win, I want to win more. If I win, it's because of my behaviors, and when my behaviors create the win, I become obsessed with that win and then I attack more. Now this is the part of our episode where you guys start to realize that vain starts popping out of my neck. For those of you that are watching on YouTube, for those of you that are listening, maybe you feel that vain popping out. I know I'm not for everybody, but standard over feelings and that type of a life setting mentality is not for everybody.

Speaker 1:

You have to show up when you don't feel like it and you have to show up after you win and that makes the difference and that is the standard and that is why I wrote the book. There's also the four Ps of the standard. It's the process I developed over these 18 years with the highest performers that are going to help you understand how significant it is, how intentional you must be. Intentional, focus every day to identify the problem, the planning, attack with the performance and then you'll have the payoff Every damn day in your life, not some days, not occasional days. It's winning at your highest level every day. It doesn't mean that you'll be perfect, but recognizing that you can live to your standard with no excuses, one day at a time, and the burn that lies inside of me.

Speaker 1:

The reason why we develop this podcast, the reason why we share these stories every single week, is because, for me, I recognize my mother passed away at 38 years old because of a rare muscle disease called amyloidosis, and amyloidosis took my mother's life at 38 years old. I'm 44, you've heard me say it before. That means I've been given six extra years that my mother never got you better. Believe I'm gonna show up every damn day and give it everything that I have. It doesn't mean that I won't have tough days. Won't mean I won't have challenging days. Won't mean that I won't have days that frustrate me, but I promise you every day will get everything that I've got. It doesn't mean that I won't mess up as a father. It doesn't mean that I won't mess up as a husband. It doesn't mean that I won't mess up as a coach, but I'm gonna give it everything that I've got so I can look in the mirror and say today, I gave it everything that I had. And when you can do that, nobody can ever ask anymore of you. You can't ask anymore of yourself. And when you do that and you stack those days, the byproduct is winning at very high levels.

Speaker 1:

It's all I've ever known and that, my friends, is the standard, and you know exactly what I'm talking about for those of you that have courageously stepped into your life to live that way, to understand what the standard is and isn't in your life. So this book might be new information. This book might be a friendly reminder, but I promise you this book is gonna put a stamp on this world as to what the standard is and give all of us an opportunity to come together. In a world that is broken, in a world that's encouraging people to not give their best, to wait around and allow people to take care of them. That is not the standard, and I will not be an innocent bystander waiting on the sidelines just watching that behavior anymore Doesn't mean that everybody's gonna join us, but I encourage you to live to your standard and to step into the fight, to lean into the fight and to be an example for your family, because that is what it's gonna take in order to take over this country again. That is what it's gonna take in order to put your stamp and your legacy on this world, not occasionally showing up, it's showing up every day. It's why I wrote the book the Standard and it's why I'm asking you to join me.

Speaker 1:

If you're part of the launch team or you're not part of the launch team, buy the book, share the message of the book. Let's lean into this together because the standard is the way. And then all I ask if you buy the book, I've just got one general rule If you like the book, share it with others. If you don't, you keep it to yourself. That's a fair rule. But join me in this fight. Join me in the official release of this book on August the 1st. You can pick it up on Amazon, barnes, noble, all the major retailers. I appreciate you and we're in this fight together.

Speaker 1:

But you know, part of this fight, it's embracing that one day at a time mentality. It's embracing the rest of the year. It's embracing this 12-round fight, just like a championship fight is 12 rounds, a calendar year is 12 months. Those are our 12 rounds of a calendar year, one day at a time, and it takes mental toughness getting up off that matta life one more time than you've been knocked down to embrace, giving it your best on your journey. So what else is happening?

Speaker 1:

On August the 1st, if a book release wasn't enough, the Mental Toughness Forum, our second Mental Toughness Forum, launches on August the 1st. That's right, in conjunction with the standard, if a book release wasn't enough. You know we do it big because we lean in. Our team couldn't be any more excited to announce that 35 of the top speakers, coaches, performers, athletes in the world will be joining you every single day. If you haven't signed up already, join 100,000 plus people that have signed up for the Mental Toughness Forum at mentaltoughnessforumcom. It's free, it's online, it's on demand. You'll get an email every day, with six to seven speakers at 9 am Central Time, announcing your speaker lineup. Watch it when you have time, watch it when you can lock in, watch it when you work out, share it with your teams at work. It is free, it is online. It'll help you embrace that standard mentality. It'll help you embrace your mental toughness. It'll help you embrace the one day at a time, stacking those days' mentality to finish this year strong with everything that you've got.

Speaker 1:

It has John Gordon, who I already mentioned and gave my love to. He knows how much I love and care about him. Without his blessing, we wouldn't have the Mental Toughness Forum, because he has the power of positive summit that he's invited me to speak to about seven times already. And I asked him would you be okay if we did a summit like yours, but we call it the Mental Toughness Forum? He said absolutely, and I'll help you build the framework to have the biggest possible impact. That is a mentor and friend. So, john, thank you for never holding me back but always pushing me forward and picking me up when I felt like I had nothing in the tank. That is a mentor. Andy Frisella, brother, I think back. It's such an honor to have you speaking at the mental toughness for him. I think back to when he invited me to be a co-host on his MF CEO project podcast, before he had the AF podcast. So think about the stories, think about the journey. That's how so many of us originally met was on Andy's podcast, sharing stages with Andy having impact with Andy. Now Andy sharing with all of you.

Speaker 1:

Dr Gabrielle Lyon, my doctor, who pushes me to be the best that I can be. I thought I was in great physical shape, but she's encouraged me to lean in more, to pay attention to the details more. Not only is she one of the speakers for the mental toughness forum and I'm telling you, her seven minute video will light up your life. It will light up your life. She's working with Navy SEALs, high performers, entrepreneurs, some of the highest performing individuals in the world, and she is their doctor to drive their performance. To the reason why she's on the mental toughness forum, she's going to be one of our key featured speakers in Las Vegas at our boot camp and also at that boot camp. For those of you that are signed up, ed Milet is part of the mental toughness forum and Ed will be joining us in Vegas. He's part of our James Bond Casino Royale themed kickoff in Las Vegas on October the eighth, but before we get to October, he is part of the mental toughness forum. I can't thank Ed enough for the belief he's instilled in me.

Speaker 1:

I remember when Ed and Andy invited me to speak for one of their Arte Syndicate events I mean, that is probably the top. It is the top entrepreneurial group in the world today they invited me during COVID to speak. It was incredible. It's those iron sharpen iron mentality and opportunities. I remember they want me to speak so I engage with their entire audience. There's thousands of people all over the world tuned in and then we get to the end and we're doing this Q&A and we're just sharpening each other's iron. I'm asking them questions during the Q&A of me so that I could get better, because those are two of the brightest minds in business to ever walk the face of the earth. All of them are speaking at the mental toughness forum, so why wouldn't you show up for free?

Speaker 1:

Then you've got Levante David, who I've worked with for over 10 years, the captain of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He's going to be a first ballot hall of famer. Wait till you see his video for the mental toughness forum. It'll blow you away. How about Amber Lee Lago, who's also going to be one of our speakers in Vegas, but she's part of the mental toughness forum Her energy, her passion, her focus, what she brings to life, her no excuses mentality facing a devastating life ending should have been life ending tragedy that she went through. But wait till you see her smile and how she attacks life. You know, one of the reasons why our team does all of this, why I love being with all of you for these burn episodes, is because there's so many lessons to learn. I'm still learning every day.

Speaker 1:

I watched every single one of these mental toughness forum videos so that I could get better. We are never finished. We're in this fight together. That burn you have to connect to it. It's what ignites your why and your purpose. But sometimes, if you're feeling like you're behind or you don't have that energy, lean into opportunities like a mental toughness forum. It's free and allow it to ignite your burn even brighter, which then ignites that why and purpose and causes you. This is what mental toughness is all about to get up off that mat of life and do it when you don't feel like it, but especially, as I mentioned, after you win.

Speaker 1:

You see the mental toughness forum, the standard. They're deeply connected. They're rooted together for your growth and your continual peak performance. That's why they're launching on the same day. If you can't tell, I am so fired up about the release of the standard. I am so fired up about the mental toughness forum. I am so fired up about Las Vegas boot camp. We only have like 20 or 25 seats even remaining for the event.

Speaker 1:

If you're interested in anything regarding boot camp, you can actually send me a direct message. To be new minute Ben Newmannet, you could send me a DM at continued fight on Instagram and for those of you that messaged me, you know you get me returning those messages. I'll even send you a video to prove it. Would love to have you in Vegas, would love to have you as part of the forum, would love to have your support for the book, because I know all of these things together will connect you on a deeper level to your burn to drive continual peak performance, which is why we get together every single week to help you attack your next level, to help you continue to drive that no excuses own it mentality. All together we're stronger. Together, let's be the standard. Thank you for joining us for this special episode of the burn. To my beautiful bride, amy, thank you again for all you do. Happy birthday, babe. I love you, and to each and every single one of you. Now we go.
